Coutinho joins Aston Villa on loan from Barcelona

Philippe Coutinho has joined Aston Villa on loan from Barcelona for the remainder of the season, the Premier League club confirmed on Friday.

Although he cost Liverpool £142 million ($192 million), the 29-year-old Brazilian international failed to make an impact at the Nou Camp and ended up on loan at Bayern Munich for the 2019/20 campaign.

The German club he played for won the Champions League that season, defeating Barcelona in the quarterfinals.

Steven Gerrard, the manager of Aston Villa, is a former teammate of the attacking midfielder’s at Liverpool.

Philippe Coutinho will spend the rest of the season on loan at Aston Villa, Villa Park announced in a statement.

Philippe will fly to Birmingham in the next 48 hours to complete a medical and obtain a work permit as part of the arrangement, which also includes an option to buy.

After a promising start under new manager Steven Gerrard, the Villains have fallen to 13th place in the Premier League after three losses in their last four games.

Gerrard on Thursday described his former Liverpool teammate as a “special footballer” while refusing to comment on speculation linking him with a move to Villa.

A statement from Barcelona revealed Coutinho, who played 106 times for the club, would be traveling to Birmingham the next day.
