Gabon coach Patrice Neveu confirmed to AFP on Thursday that Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had tested positive for COVID-19 two days before Gabon’s Africa Cup of Nations opener.
They all tested positive after taking a lateral flow test but are still waiting for the results of a PCR one. Aubameyang, Lemina, and assistant coach Yala Anicet all tested positive.
There were no symptoms, according to Neveu, who also added that they had been tested with a PCR and are now confined to their hotel room.
In the biannual African showpiece competition being hosted by Cameroon, Aubameyang — who was stripped of Arsenal captaincy last month — faces the possibility of missing Gabon’s opening Group C encounter against Comoros on January 10.
Burkina Faso thrashed Gabon 3-0 in a friendly match in Dubai on Sunday, and Gabon now faces a trip to the finals.
